How well are health field graduates from Rhode Island’s public higher education system connecting to Rhode Island’s workforce? In this report, we examine the employment outcomes of recent health degree and certificate earners from URI, RIC, and CCRI.
Over roughly the last ten years, 13,368 individuals received a degree or certificate in a health related field from URI, RIC, or CCRI. Of these, at least 8,907 (66.6%) have found work in Rhode Island for some portion of their time since graduating. There is a good deal of employment stability here: many of these individuals are found to be working in RI the entire time since their graduation.
Here, we see the total number of quarters worked from 2012 to 2015 by URI, RIC, and CCRI health field graduates. Many have secured employment for the entire time (16 quarters) for which data are available. Note that the more recent graduates have not yet been part of the labor market for a full 16 quarters. So, as more information becomes available in the future, many of these individuals may also be found to have obtained work for the full span of time since their graduations. For those with earlier graduation dates, it's possible that many have been employed over a longer period of time than we are able to examine. Also, it’s likely that some graduates found work in Rhode Island for a time before the wage data can account for, and then moved out of state or re-enrolled in higher education (for example, an individual who graduated in 2007 and worked from 2008 to 2010 before moving out of state).
Note: Values count the number of individuals found for various total # of quarters of employment.
Here, the time employed data displayed in the first bar chart can be viewed by a given year by using the selector to the right of the chart. Through selecting specific years, we can see more clearly that graduates who have spent 16 quarters or more (those from 2005-2011) in the labor market have tended to find employment for the total time that the data account for.
Note: Values count the number of individuals found for various total # of quarters of employment.
Of the 13,368 known graduates of programs in health related from URI, RIC, and CCRI between the spring term of 2005 and the spring term of 2015, 7,300 (54.6%) are currently working in Rhode Island.
This display shows the landscape of fields of study for graduates in health related fields who are currently working in Rhode Island. Most notably, 3,412 of the 7,300 (46.7%) graduates working in Rhode Island today majored in or received certificates in the Nursing field. The next closest field, Psychology (General), accounts for 16.2% of graduates or certificate holders working in Rhode Island today.
Note: The "Nursing" category includes all graduates in fields reported as "Nursing" (a designation used through 2010) as well as “Registered Nursing, Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing” and “Practical Nursing, Vocational Nursing and Nursing Assistants”, which are the two designations reported in place of "Nursing" more recently.
The bar chart to the left shows the distribution of graduates among the major industries within the healthcare and social assistance sector. The specific industries that graduates are employed in today are noteworthy. There are 5,308 individuals working in the healthcare and social assistance sector today in RI. Of the 5,308, the largest share belongs to the General Medical and Surgical Hospitals industry (38.9%) followed by Nursing Care Facilities (14.7%) and then Specialty Hospitals (5.5%). These findings show that there is considerable demand for nursing related occupations.
